![]() Lord Jagannadh (Krishna) of Puri Vishnu Sahasranamam was revealed to Yudhishtira by Bheeshma Pitaamaha, when the latter was on the death bed (Ampa Shayya). It is extremely powerful stotra and was revealed in answer to the questions of Yudhishtira about the ultimate Goals and objectives (Parama Dharma) of Human life. This book deals with the thousand names of Lord Vishnu, which were written by Maharishi Veda Vyasa in Mahabharat. The Vishnu Sahasranamam should be recited contemplating Lord Krishna and his Vishva Roopam. In the Kaliyuga, the only way that leads to Moksha is to recite the names of the Lord, as many times as possible. The idea is to keep the mind attached to the Lord, so that it is trained to remember the Lord at the time of Death. Adi Shankaracharya said, "Bhaja Govindam", and the Naama Smarana alone protect us at the time when the Antya Kaala (death) approaches us. The same Shankaracharya also said, "Geyam Geeta, Naama Sahasram", which means "The books worthy of being read are Bhagavad Geetha and Vishnu Sahasranamam. Interestingly, Shankaracharya wrote Bhashya to these two books in Sanskrit. The Bhashya or the interpretation or exposition in Sanskrit is a little out of reach to the common reader.
